KBE expected to name an interim commissioner today

This from the Herald-Leader:
The Kentucky Board of Education will probably name an interim state education commissioner at a meeting Wednesday, board chairman Roger Marcum said.

Kentucky Education Commissioner Terry Holliday is retiring Aug. 31, and the board is searching for a permanent replacement.

Holliday became Kentucky's fifth education commissioner in July 2009.

Kentucky Department of Education staffers are on the short list of possible candidates for the interim position, Marcum said, but he declined to provide names or the number of candidates.

He said he hoped the interim commissioner, who would begin the job Sept. 1, would not have to serve more than 30 to 60 days.

The interim position is necessary because even if the state board names a permanent commissioner soon after Holliday's retirement, there could be transition time, Marcum said.

Also at Wednesday's meeting in Frankfort, the state board is set to review applications for the permanent position with representatives from a search firm. Marcum said state board members hoped to narrow the list of candidates for the permanent position as they meet with representatives of the search firm Greenwood/Asher and Associates.
