Shelton met with other school superintendents, education officials in D.C.

This from H-L:

Fayette Schools Superintendent Tom Shelton was in Washington on Monday and Tuesday, meeting with other leading school superintendents from around the country.

Shelton was invited to the session as a result of being named School Superintendent of the Year in Kentucky for 2011. About 40 other school superintendents of the year from various states attended the meeting to talk about education issues and mutual concerns.

"There was a lot of networking going on, and we shared ideas on dealing with budget cuts, tough economic times and innovative means of generating new revenue," Shelton said. "The heavy focus was on the economy because every state has been affected by it."

The group met Tuesday with U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan. Among other things, they discussed the government's plan to grant states waivers to drop some requirements of the No Child Left Behind Act. Kentucky plans to request a waiver.

The trip involved no expense to Fayette County Public Schools. Shelton returned to Lexington on Tuesday afternoon.

The dialog in Washington at the Department of Education

Arnie: "Tom, can we count Fayette County in for more testing?"

Tom: "Absolutely. And what do we get in return?"

Arnie: "We can try and crunch numbers to make it look like Fayette County is a progressive district leading in student achievement."

Tom: "Sounds, good. And what about the Presidential Award of Freedom for my mentor, Stu Silberman?"

Arnie: "Doesn't Stu have a lot of lawsuits pending? I'd like to wait until after the election if Stu is to receive any award from teh President."

Tom: "Yeah, not a bad idea."
