President Obama will travel to the University of Texas at Austin today to give a speech focused on higher education. No new policies or programs are expected to be announced. Aides said the speech will emphasize the importance of higher education as one of the "four pillars" of the country's new economic foundation, describe the president's "college completion" goal, and recap the "tremendous progress" the administration has made so far in implementing changes designed to reach that goal.The President will deliver his speech on The University of Texas at Austin campus Monday, Aug. 9 about 2 p.m. in Gregory Gym.

I do hope that President Obama keeps his hands out of higher education. Sadly, though, the President seems to be advocating a college degree for everyone, and this is not needed.
What is needed is an apprenticeship program for students who hold a high school degree and wish to enter professions like mechanics, plumbing, connstruction,and manufacturing.
It is hardly elitist to say that college is not for everyone. Yet, by speaking at Texas-Austin this appears to be the president's message. The United States sends more people to college and university than most nations. Why try to send students who are not the least bit interested in a university education to college?
