S.C. Ed Staff Taking Unpaid Furloughs

South Carolina Education Department employees must take five days of unpaid leave by the end of June — the latest example of how agencies around the state are dealing with the slumping economy — officials said Wednesday.

State schools Superintendent Jim Rex sent an e-mail to employees explaining the mandatory furloughs, which represent a $569,000 savings...
