Coach's program teaches computer skillsFormer University of Kentucky basketball coach Tubby Smith moved about 660 miles northwest, but his Tubby's Clubhouse program continues to help students in Covington and elsewhere in the commonwealth.
"The Tubby Smith Foundation still is in place in Lexington, so even though Tubby moved on to (the University of) Minnesota, the foundation is still in place and has agreed to continued to support our program up here in Covington," said Ellen Muse-Lindeman, director of development for one of the program's sponsors, Center for Great Neighborhoods of Covington.
Tubby's Clubhouse teaches students who don't have computers in their homes how to take them apart, put them back together, program the machines and use the Internet. Those who graduate from the program earn Dell computers and Lexmark printers, plus a year of free Internet service.
Under heavy UK fan criticism, Smith in March left to become coach at the Big Ten school.
"I think that's just a testament to the character of coach Smith," said Denise Carl of Alexandria, a past president of the Northern Kentucky/Greater Cincinnati UK Alumni Club. She's one of the local volunteers who helped launch the program....
