(FRANKFORT, Ky.) - At its regular meeting Wednesday and Thursday, the Kentucky Board of Education heard presentations, had in-depth discussions and made decisions on a number of items.
The board discussed the search for a new commissioner of education and agreed to a timeline for the selection. The position will be advertised as soon as possible in state and national publications. On October 3, the board will begin reviewing applications and select from three to seven candidates. Background and reference checks will begin immediately after the selection and should be completed by mid-October. Once the checks are completed, the board will announce finalists. Interviews are set to begin on November 13.
The board had lengthy discussions about its strategic plan and budget priorities, both of which will be revisited at future meetings.
The board took the following actions:
· approved the appointment of three new members to the Kentucky Writing Program Advisory Committee: Denise Henry of Cumberland Trace Elementary in Warren County; Sherry Ederheimer, an English resource teacher for Jefferson County; and Artavia Acklin of Clear Creek Elementary in Shelby County
· approved a regulation (704 KAR 7:101) that repeals 704 KAR 7:100, a regulation that is no longer necessary
· gave final approval to 704 KAR 4:020, which deletes a requirement for a tuberculin skin test for school district employees in favor of a tuberculosis risk assessment developed by the Kentucky Department of Health
· gave final approval to 702 KAR 5:080, which makes the tuberculosis protocol developed by the Kentucky Department of Health consistent for all school employees
· approved the FY08 unmet education technology need for school districts
· approved the Kentucky Education Technology System (KETS) funds identified for shared services and offers of assistance
· approved the 2006 District Board Member In-Service Training Report, the exceptions to training for 2006 and the 2008 In-Service Training Plan, all provided by the Kentucky School Boards Association (KSBA)
The board heard an update from the Covington Independent and Jefferson County school systems on plans for improvement in low-performing schools. The board also heard a report from the Commission on Interscholastic Athletics, which is charged with reviewing the operational efficiency of the Kentucky High School Athletics Association (KHSAA).
The board’s Management Committee agreed to table action on facilities plans from the Clay County and Graves County school districts until the board’s October meeting.
Other discussion items included:
· elementary and middle school norm-referenced testing
· a report from the Interagency Task Force on Dual Credit
· an update on the implementation of the Individual Learning Plan
· the criteria for Highly Skilled Educators
· the financial Watch List
