Boycotting Brinkley Students Return to Class

Students who had boycotted the Brinkley School District last week are back in their classrooms.

About 300 black students began the boycott to call attention to a lack of black administrators and how black students are treated. Sixty percent of the 842 student district is black.

Superintendent Randy Byrd says he met with parents and heard their concerns. One of the boycott organizers, Willie Branch, says truancy worries led some parents to send their children back to school.

The boycott coincided with the first day of the Arkansas Benchmark Exams, standardized tests that are taken by third- through eighth-grade students. The district has been given an extension until Friday to finish the testing.
